Support the Libre Graphics Meeting

By dneary ( 284 Medal_gold_3 )

Libre Graphics Meeting, 8 - 11 May 2008

What is the Libre Graphics Meeting?

The Libre Graphics Meeting brings together developers and users of free software graphics applications, such as the GIMP, Inkscape, Scribus, Blender, Krita, the Open Clipart Library and more.

In its third edition, the organization needs your help! You can support your favorite graphics application, and ensure that the travel costs of as many volunteer developers as possible are paid to ensure that this edition of the conference is more successful that its predecessors.

Where will the money go?

We have kept costs associated with infrastructure to a minimum. Over 80% of the conference budget will be spent on subsidizing travel and accommodation costs for developers.

A non-profit organization

All donations will be made to the conference organizers via the GNOME Foundation, a 501©3 tax exempt US-based non-profit, so donations will be tax deductible for US taxpayers. We would like to thank the GNOME Foundation for their support.

This sounds like a really great conference, and as a user of several of these products I am thrilled to see an event dedicated to bringing users and devs together to make them even better.

I’d be amazing if the entire 20k could be raised in just 15 days. I really hope the Pledgie community rallies around this cause.

P.S. Go Inkscape! (my personal fav)

The Libre Graphics Meeting has established itself as one of the key annual conferences for open source software developers. As far as I’m aware, it’s the only one focussed particularly on the graphic and design area. Crucial advances have come out of these gatherings – so I’m happy to support the creation of a travel fund for developers of Libre Graphics.

I was so excited about the pledge drive that I forgot to create an account before sending in my donation. So I don’t get a little burgundy banner, but I get the warm satisfaction of sending some libre artists to work on the tools that help make free software beautiful!

Hey guys,

There is a Pledgie Facebook application, which is in silent beta (we’ve not announced it yet officially). It allows you to embed a campaign badge on your Facebook profile page. I am sure this campaign is full of connected individuals ;-) and I bet pushing the badge to your profile will be a great way to generate more interest in the campaign.

I just discovered GIMP last week, and I am so excited about it! I’ve kept Adobe Photoshop and Photoshop Essentials on my computer for years. This little gem, however goes far beyond Photoshop in so many ways. Aside from it loading more quickly and hogging less resources, I love how customizable it is. I wish I’d known about this years ago! And the best part, is that it’s created by volunteers who think like me, and who want to make a difference. Thanks guys and girls – and have fun in Wroclav. I was there two years ago, and it is a beautiful city. Don’t miss the “modern” fountains in the main square, and be sure to drop by the Tourist Information Office in the square – free internet access, incredibly friendly people, and lots of info. Ask them about the gnomes, and how to find them. There are tiny bronze gnomes scattered about the downtown area; some are easy to spot – others a bit more difficult. For some photos (gnomes and otherwise) look here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/margiec/sets/72157602902550497/

Enjoy your trip, and keep ’em coming!

Over $9500 raised (including some pending donations)

240 donors

750 sites advertising the campaign

700,000 page views for the badge

Over 13,000 visitors to this campaign site

Wow! On so many levels, those are impressive numbers.

I’m going to update teh campaign goal, reducing the goal from $20,000 (which is now clearly unattainable) to the realistic bit ambitious $12,000 – let’s see if we can’t make 100% in the next 36 hours.

The graphic field is highly complex. If someone is still wondering about the importance of meetings such as the Libre Graphics Meeting in the development of Open Source Applications, think of this:

Those apps cover an incredibly complex array of tasks: pixels and vectors manipulations of all kinds, transparency and blends, colors, 3D, fonts and font management, file formats, export/output, resolution, color space, color management, state-of-the-art typography, human language diversity and complexity, GUI issues and among-apps interactions, etc. They have to work well and they have to work well together. People are generally using many of them, not just one of them! :)

Open, tight and face-to-face discussions among highly knowledgeable and highly skilled developers and users have an overwhelming “push forward” effect on ideas that would take far more time to arise — and could even not arise at all — through the day-to-day regular channels. LGM is hot. It’s a bleeding edge conference. It’s hard work and good fun. It is a necessity!

I hope to be convincing enough so that in the last hours of the campaign we’ll be able to attain our goal or even go beyond it. Every bit added to the budget is helping those people get together for the benefit of all!

In only two years, the Libre Graphics Meeting has become a hugely important meeting place for free software graphics developers. With surveys showing that the main gaps in the Linux desktop offering now are graphics applications (Photoshop, Illustrator, Visio, AutoCAD), the conference becomes even more vital to the advancement of the free software desktop.

A few weeks ago, I got a heads-up from the Libre Graphics Meeting organisers that we weren’t doing so well on the sponsorship front as we have in the past. The major cost center for the conference will be subsidising travel and accommodation for volunteer developers who could not otherwise attend.

And so, today, we launch a fundraising campaign! With the help of Pledgie and the GNOME Foundation we have set an ambitious but necessary target – we hope to raise $20,000 in community donations over the next two weeks.

For those who appreciate the projects that this conference supports (including Inkscape, Scribus, GIMP, Blender, Krita, Open Clipart, …) and have been looking for a way to support them, then please give generously.
