Most Americans have no idea that the U.S. has never won an Olympic Gold medal in the second most popular sport in the world. How big is this sport? Only soccer has more practitioners. In the last World games 186 nations sent soccer teams and 190 sent JUDO teams and only 17 sent freestyle wrestling teams. Freestyle is America’s grappling sport. JUDO far more exciting to watch and much more attractive for female participants. Freestyle wrestling is the grappling seen in every school in the US but it is so rare in the rest of the world that the IOC is planning to remove it from the Olympics. The grappling that most all of the rest of the world does is called Judo. More than 9 of 10 Americans think Judo is some form of karate. To get an idea of what judo is think of MMA fights (UFC etc). Imagine that with no hitting of any kind. What you usually see in MMA fights is Jiu JItsu (aka BJJ – Brazillian Jiu Jitsu). Jiu Jitsu is the ground fighting half of Judo. Judo has over 60 throws to take the opponent down before the ground half is used. If a throw is done perfectly it can end the fight. Judo is a great sport with a very low injury rate. Judo techniques are taught to all special forces. Veronica Graves has been recruited to the Olympic training Center to train for the 2012 Olympics and needs sponsors. Her greatest desire is to be the 1st American to bring the U.S. a Gold in Judo. She is a serious competitor dedicated to her sport: Veronica is a very honorable girl who has the support of her coaches and family but needs money to win that Gold Medal for all of us. IF you have any questions for Veronica please contact here
Judo has no striking of any kind.
Sorry there is no “Judo chop”.
However getting sponsors for a sport few know or understand is a constant uphill battle. Now the world leaders of the Olympics have passed new rules that make it even tougher for US players to compete.
What they amount to is this;
If you don’t have the money to travel to Europe and a few other places in the world many times each year for big competitions, you just don’t get to go to the Olympics, even if you are the best in your country!
- She trains at 2 clubs besides the OTC .
- Adding training at the Air Force Academy soon.
- She does not smoke or drink, not ever, at all.
- She also does not date (this is a serious athlete).
- She got straight “A’s” with a 5 course load thisÂ
semester but would like to take lighter loads to spend more time on her sport. Unfortunately she loses money if she does.
