teamTAD

teamTAD is a community of people supporting an open source movement in architecture. Just the way the open source software movement has helped improve software, we believe that by opening out the source code of architecture among professionals before it is built will surely help make better built environments. The world has been talking about energy efficiency, sustainability and the protection of the Gaia (mother earth) However, thus far, there has been no real focused approach for achieving all those goals.

teamTAD.com is the website that documents this project, gathering interested parties under one roof. It currently contains the documentation and various solutions/services that will be provided to architects and allied professionals. At the core of the project lies a software (a freeware) called TAD Designer Lite which handles the efficient representation of the built-environment. It is possibly the world’s first BIM (Building Information Modeler) because it was written way back in 1989.

The main software in this project was centrally used to produce over 3 million sq.ft. of built works. It was also used in two research projects concerning calculation of energy in buildings which were conducted by a leading technical institute in India (IIT-Bombay).

This project was continuously funded all these years in the offices of one architect. However there is an upper limit that one office can do. With the Web 2.0 capabilities of the Internet, we hope to open up the project so that everyone can participate. All software solutions being developed will also be based on the open-source model and will be using the Internet to distribute data. All participants in this project can further make money by acting as creators and conduits for architectural data used in the system. In short, this project will be a win-win situation for all.
