Show Noobkit Some Love

Noobkit is a labor of love, and as such it always needs some from you or it will wither and die. A cup of coffee or a beer’s worth a month will keep us going and developing more cool features for you!

It costs me $79/m for shared VPS hosting. This is the minimum I would like to raise every month. Anything above would help me spend more time to develop new features.

Thank you for making it happen!

What’re your hosting requirements? Seems like you could get cheaper hosting elsewhere – someone like Linode does their top-end VPS for $79/mo and it’s got lots of brawn…

@nixgeek:

I adjusted my hosting price (from $89 to $79) because I got a slightly better deal offered to me by my current host.

Requirements are pretty straight forward: 512mb ram and about 1gb of disk space. At present I’m quite happy with what I have and moving the site is a pain I’m not willing to go through again at this moment :)

I can recommend www.futurehosting.biz.

I’ve been with them for a while with very few problems and good tech support when necessary. I get a non-control panel vps very cheap, but also have managed plans.

For 512 MB ram, they’d charge $35-$50 depending on management plan and 32 or 64 bit OS.

All come with 30GB space, 2 IPs, and 450GB transfer.

I would suggest Amazon S3. Their small instances are 10 cents an hour, which comes out to 72$ a month (less than what you’re currently paying). They’re more than powerful enough for most things (1.7 GB of memory, 1 EC2 Compute Unit (1 virtual core with 1 EC2 Compute Unit, which is equivalent to 1.0-1.2 GHz 2007 Opteron or 2007 Xeon processor), 160 GB of instance storage, 32-bit platform). Of course, being EC2, it’s got great storage with S3 right at your fingertips, and instant scalability should something require it. I love it so far [-:

I understand moving sites is a pain, but you might consider: www.slicehost.com

I’ve been really happy with them, and for your needs you could get the 512 slice (what I have):

512mb ram, 20gb storage, 200gb transfer $38/month

Regardless, keep up the good work. It is a great and much appreciated resource.

I third the Slicehost recommendation. The price is right, and Matt and Jason are amazing. Might not be worth the move unless it’s hard to raise that amount monthly, but if cash gets tight, $38/mo is quite a bit easier to pull off.

I’d recommend slicehost 256MB + mod rails and ruby enterprise edition, to keep the RAM budget lower :)

-R

I have used linode with good success—360MB RAM at $20/month (make sure you install a 32-bit OS—rails processes will then use much less memory)

Cheers!

-=r
