Naweed’s Lung Transplant Fund
In November of 2006, as he was about to attend university in Philadelphia, Naweed Hamit was diagnosed with a
chronic and
progressive lung illness called
Idiopathic Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (IPAH). It is a condition that restricts the blood flow through the
pulmonary artery to the lungs, which restricts oxygenation. This has an impact on other organs such as the heart and kidneys and causes
heart failure.
Five years later, having graduated with a dual BSc./MSc. in Civil and Architectural Engineering, he has been on various therapies, and as the condition gradually progressed, he was constantly introduced to stronger medications and treatments, including a number of IPAH-specific oral medications and nebulizers. Of late, he has had to switch to the newest and last existing stage of therapy known to work – a continuous infusion of intravenous (IV) epoprostenol.
He has finally been asked to consider becoming evaluated for a lung transplant as soon as possible, in the case that this final therapy does not produce results and no new therapies are discovered. As his status in the US is in transition, and his condition is considered pre-existing, he is disqualified him from insurance that would cover the cost of an evaluation. If he would like to get evaluated and eventually go through with the transplant, he would have to raise the funds himself, which at current he does not have at his disposal.
The cost of an evaluation and a lung transplant has not yet been determined, however, he would like to politely request for donations to contribute towards these expenses. Any donation to the Fund in any amount would be welcomed as much-needed assistance and thus be greatly appreciated.
