The mission of NSVI is to promote and provide free No-Scalpel Vasectomy services worldwide, but especially in developing countries whose infrastructure and environmental resources are challenged by rapid population growth unchecked by established and/or effective family planning programs. The rationale for this promotion is based upon a number of facts and beliefs:
- Vasectomy is the most effective means of long-term contraception, primarily because, once rendered, it requires no compliance, as is the case with barrier and hormonal methods.
- Female sterilization under local anesthesia is more time-consuming and painful than vasectomy, and less effective.
- Pregnancy and childbirth are the main causes of mortality in underdeveloped countries for women ages 15-35, with the rate of complications rising as parity increases.
- In countries with limited infrastructure (good roads, public transportation, running water, electricity, etc.) and social programs (health care, police protection, free public education, etc.), high birth rates promote joblessness, poverty, and crowded living conditions, which, in turn, breed crime and disease.
Promotion and provision of vasectomy services by necessity requires that NSVI also (1) actively engage in the training of local health care workers to themselves promote and provide no-scalpel vasectomy, and (2) provide incentives for (a) local providers who may not be otherwise reimbursed for their time and effort, and (b) recipients of the service themselves to compensate for travel expenses and lost wages on the day of and day after their procedures.
