Alas! Mixxx 1.8 has been released, and we’re looking forward to continuing development of Mixxx 1.9, which will bring Shoutcast/Icecast broadcasting support and more performance optimizations. Though before we get there, we’d like to incorporate some lessons we’ve learnt from Mixxx 1.8’s development into our next release cycle.
In particular, we’ve gotten more serious about Quality Assurance testing, and we’ve learned the hard way that we need to be more thorough about testing during the release cycle instead of leaving it until the end. In order to help us get faster, better testing done (and subsequently get Mixxx releases out the door quicker), we have to be producing builds for Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X much more frequently.
In order to produce builds faster, we’d like to purchase a dedicated Mixxx build server that we can configure to produce nightly builds of as many branches of Mixxx as possible. For Mixxx fans, this means faster access to new, in-development features, but also a greater opportunity to contribute through testing and bug reporting. The earlier we hear about bugs, the more likely we are to fix them.
Nightly builds will also help us avoid situations (which we’ve had recently) where we’re ready to produce a release, but then discover that an innocuous update to a third-party library has crippled Mixxx in some terrible way. With nightly builds, we can catch these types of problems much faster, and then test fixes and workarounds faster too.
We’re looking to raise $1,200 USD to cover the cost of the build server’s hardware and software. Alternatively, we’re considering hosting the build server in the cloud, in which case the money will cover the corresponding fees associated with that. (We’re going to go whichever route strikes the best balance of frugality and convenience.) Any additional money will either go to cover other ongoing costs (like our two existing web hosting plans), bounties to help encourage new contributors to fix bugs, or other expenses that directly support Mixxx development.
Thank you for your generous support!
