Laser Cutter

By hive76 ( 29 Medal_bronze_1 )

UPDATE:
We are switching our focus to the open source Lasersaur. That means we are closer to our goal! The used laser we are shooting for with $10000 is unnecessary. The Lasersaur will use the laser tube from the chinese Meatcards laser and an $570 Alpha Kit from the Lasersaur project. We will need to source framing and steppers. The estimate for all this is only $2000, so the goal has changed. Cost breakdown below.

How awesome is a laser cutter? This awesome! You can cut this with a laser cutter or any other amazing thing you can think of.

Use cases:
•Use this script to generate a box for your latest project.
•Etch some nori.
•Drop some permanent marks on anodized aluminum or almost anything else.
•Cut fabric for your wedding dress.

The CNC laser cutter will be a great addition to our making resources. With a makerbot you add material together to get a form, but with cutting you get a material and cut it down to size. The makerbot itself is made this way.

Cost:
• $570 Lasersaur Alpha kit: optics, electronics, belts, fasteners
• $500 Extruded aluminum rails
• $700 Fume extractor for exhaust
• Remaining funds for unseen costs
• Free: Laser tube from Meatcards, Stepper motors from Meatcards or elsewhere, Paneling is nominal.

If you donate money here, each dollar will be redeemable in actual laser time at $1/min rate. If you don’t know, that’s a lot of cutting for a little dough.
Also for a $10 you’ll get a lasercut trinket as a thank you.
